The spell says that if, by the rose loses its last petal, the beast doesn't find true love, then he and his servants will remain this way forever.

When Belle arrived at the palace of the beast, she made a trade for her father's freedom, saying that she will stay in his place. The beast accepts, but when she snoops around and finds the cursed rose, he scares her away into the woods, where she's attacked by a bunch of wolves. The beast saves her and gets injured during the attack, but Belle treats his wounds properly. That's the point where these two characters fell in love, and this is the reason why he sets Belle free.

Back at home, Belle has the mission to convince everyone that her father is not insane when he talks about the existence of the beast, even though, Gaston tries to prove her wrong.
